realizing awards 2008

TVB Anniversary 51 Comments »

It’s extremely ironic that the year I decided to stop caring about the Anniversary Awards and stop trying to “predict” the winners since TVB rigs them, TVB decides to play fair and give all of their awards to deserving nominees. Ain’t it funny? Anyhow, the winners of TVB’s 41st Anniversary Awards are here!

There are no upsets, controversies, or disappointments this year. For a change of pace, this year the TVB community will have “peace” for once over the Anniversary Awards.

Best Actor – Ha Yu (Moonlight Resonance)

I’m so, so happy for Ha Yu! It’s very touching to watch someone who has worked so hard win an award they’ve been pursuing for so long. I could tell that Ha Yu was not happy last year when he lost this award. He tried to play it off like he didn’t care, but I knew he did and I wasn’t surprised when he revealed to the press that he was actually so upset that he locked himself in his house for 2 days after the awards ceremony last year. Although I think his role as Dai Bao in Heart of Greed was more outstanding (minus the stupid laugh), I have to say that Ha Yu out-performed every single actor in Moonlight. His crying was amazing and he acted his heart out. Last year’s disappointment truly gave him the drive and determination to do so well this year and he deserves the award so much.

Best Actress – Michelle Yim (Moonlight Resonance)

Last year Michelle was overshadowed in Heart (in fact, I often forgot that she was even in the series), but she comes back with a vengeance in Moonlight — even winning the “Best Actress” award! Michelle has been an exquisite actress for many, many years in many different roles and she continues to excel and shine. I look forward to seeing her in every series she takes part in and she’s always a delight. She is truly the most youthful-looking veteran around. I am very happy that she won as her performance in Moonlight was powerful.

Best Supporting Actor – Wayne Lai (The Gentle Crackdown II)

The most deserving winner of the night! I’ve been rooting for Wayne to win this award since 2006 (Safe Guards — phenomenal performance!) and I am ecstatic that TVB finally gave him this award that he deserves so, so much. Wayne is TVB’s strongest supporting actor and he shines in every role. It’s great that TVB is finally waking up and realizing how much talent this guy has. He is an awesome actor who is extremely versatile. He can act as anything and be convincing and natural inside and out.

Best Supporting Actress – Tavia Yeung (Moonlight Resonance)

“Best Supporting Actress” has been a joke award since TVB first created it back in 2006 when the Anniversary Awards was re-invented. Finally… at long last, this year Tavia gives the award prestige, value, and meaning. Although I would have liked Lee Heung Kam to win this award since I think she was outstanding in Moonlight, Tavia’s win is very deserving as well. She always does her best in any role that she’s given. Tavia finally got her chance to shine after so many years living in the shadow of others. Congratulations!

Most Improved Actor – Wong Cho Lam (Best Selling Secrets, D.I.E.)

Wong Cho Lam is brilliant and talented. He is such a hilarious guy! He cracked me up in Heavenly In-Laws and Best Selling Secrets (in the episodes that I watched). I haven’t seen him in any form of drama acting so I don’t know how versatile and well-rounded his acting is, but he is a valuable player in comedy.

Most Improved Actress – Nancy Wu (Wars of In-Laws II,
D.I.E., The Silver Chamber of Sorrows, Legend of the Demigods)

Unexpected, but deserving as she’s worked hard for many years. TVB is taking notice of Nancy thanks to the celebrity dancing match Strictly Come Dancing where Nancy received an immense popularity boost. Although her roles in series this year have been small, they’ve been diverse and she shows improvement. I didn’t think much of Nancy before, but after watching Legend of the Demigods, I think she has potential in acting. It’s touching to see her win. Hopefully she’ll continue to improve.

Most Favorite Male Character – Raymond Lam – Gam Wing Ho (Moonlight Resonance)

This was expected. Although I like Raymond and his role in Moonlight was likable, I don’t think this role or performance was that special to win an award. I would rather see Kevin Cheng win for his role as Cheung Sing Hei in Last One Standing or Sunny Chan as An Hei in Demigods as I like these two characters much more. However, since Ray wasn’t going to win “Best Actor”, TVB had to give him this award; I’m okay with it.

Most Favorite Female Character – Louise Lee – Chung Siu Hor (Moonlight Resonance)

Expected… but disappointing. I would rather Liza Wang win for her excellent performance and outstanding role as Sister O in Wars of In-Laws II or Susanna Kwan for her brilliant performance as Auntie Sa in Moonlight. Seriously, it’s upsetting that Liza (I feel so sorry for her and she looked very displeased throughout the ceremony) and Susanna were overlooked since I think Louise’s role and performance in Moonlight wasn’t very captivating. Oh well; her win is acceptable.

Lifetime Achievement – Paul Chun

I was actually expecting Lee Heung Kam to win this award. However, Paul is another deserving winner. He’s been with TVB for so many years and continues to light up the TVB screen with his great acting. This year, he shined with his totally different and extraordinary role as the unreasonable tyrant in The Silver Chamber of Sorrows (why isn’t he nominated for “Best Actor”?!). He is the perfect “dad” actor (so lovable, heartwarming, and sweet to watch in series such as Family Man and Love Bond). It’s great that TVB gave him an award and I’m really happy that he got it.

Best Series – Moonlight Resonance

TVB won’t deny the series that gained it the highest peak rating in its history the win as “Best Series” of 2008. I don’t love the series, but I love Moonlight’s cast so I’m happy that they won again. I would have much preferred to see Wars of In-Laws II, A Journey Called Life, The Silver Chamber of Sorrows, and Last One Standing take the award since I think they are all much higher-quality series than Moonlight. It’s impossible to beat the hype of Moonlight though.

The winners of TVB’s 40th Anniversary Awards are here!

Best Actor – Moses Chan (Heart of Greed)

Congratulations to Moses! From the start, this award had Moses’ name on it and I thoroughly supported him for the award. I saw no other winner. The Best Actor award is finally in the hands of someone deserving again. Moses has grown and improved so much as an actor. He has the versatility and charm that other leading actors do not have. He can transform and mold himself into any role and is amazing with both comedy and drama.

Best Actress – Lee See Kei (Heart of Greed)

Congratulations to Lee See Kei! Without her fantastic performance as “Dai Kai”, I do not think Heart of Greed would have been so engaging. She is an excellent veteran and I am happy to have her in the TVB pool. She keeps me watching A Kindred Spirit. I look forward to seeing her performance as a conniving matriarch in The Gem of Life.

Mainland Viewer’s Favorite TVB Actor – Raymond Lam
Mainland Viewer’s Favorite TVB Actress – Gigi Lai

I’m happy for both Raymond and Gigi as I like them both. Their awards were determined purely on votes (and each vote cost $1), so for once, the award is 100% not rigged. It’s kind of funny. I was so upset at Gigi for stealing the award from Sheren Tang back in 2004 with her no-so-great performance in War and Beauty, but since then, I’ve grown to like her a lot – especially from looking at pictures and reading write-ups on her character and performance in The Ultimate Crime Fighter. I’m so close to watching that series just for her. I look forward to her performance in The Gem of Life with Moses.

Best Supporting Actor – Louis Yuen (Heart of Greed)

Wow! I’m surprised. People told me that Louis would win, but I didn’t believe it because I didn’t think he gained that much popularity from Heart. In any case, I am so happy for Louis. After so many years, he gets an award. His comedic skills are impeccable. He was a huge part in making the Virtues of Harmony legacy the hilarity that it was. He’s very fluid and likable. I hope they put his comedy chops to use in Heart II (which is a comedy supposedly). Honestly, I wasn’t too impressed with his acting in Heart, but that’s beside the point. I do think he deserves the award because he’s a fine supporting actor.

Best Supporting Actress – Fala Chen (Steps)

Speechless. I didn’t believe the reports [before the awards night] when I read it. I couldn’t fathom Fala taking home Best Supporting Actress. For Most Improved, I could, but Best Supporting Actress?! 2007 was the first “official” year that Fala made her debut onto the TVB scene with a significant role… and already she’s awarded? I am appalled. This is worse than when Shirley Yeung won the same award last year. I feel it is such an insult to the veterans [once again]. With that being said, I do like Fala. I think she has a lot of potential in her acting and her performances thus far have been not bad. She’s hot and has a lot of charisma that’s appealing on-screen. Still, an award for her performances which have yet to scratch the surface of her full potential? Just… ridiculous. What happened to Fala saying herself that it was too early for her to be awarded?

Most Improved Actor – Amigo Chui [TVB Host]

Um… no comment. I’ve had no exposure to him besides seeing him host here and there. At those moments, I didn’t pay any attention to him… but I suppose he’s an okay host. I am just so relieved that Lai Lok Yi was not awarded. As should be clear, I do not think highly of him and really dreaded seeing him win Most Improved Actor.

Most Improved Actress – Kate Tsui (On The First Beat, Steps)

I knew it! I knew it! I knew it! After last year’s anniversary, I joked that Kate would probably walk away with the Most Improved Actress award at the 40th Anniversary. It seems like Bernice Liu is just not destined for this award. Even though her popularity was red hot because of her custom-made role in Steps, she still couldn’t win. Perhaps TVB believes she hasn’t improved enough yet. It looks like Bernice will never win this award. It’s obvious that TVB favors Kate over Bernice. Kate has leading roles while Bernice has been demoted to “guest star” or supporting status. Kate has received critical acclaim for her acting in the HK movie Eye in the Sky co-starring with big names Tony Leung and Simon Yam [even more, she was hand-picked for the role]. Bernice has yet to receive any critical acclaim for her acting.

To be honest, I don’t know why… but lately, I’ve started to really like Kate. I think she looks absolutely gorgeous in 少年四大名捕. I wasn’t going to watch that series because I think it looks crappy, but seeing how Kate is so radiant in her costumes, I may just watch it. As for her acting, I agree that she’s over-the-top and exaggerates way too much (i.e. On The First Beat). However, I do think she has improved and shows potential in her acting. I like her. I thought she was pretty in The Price of Greed and her debut cameo in When Rules Turn Loose was also refreshing. I think Kate fares better in the feminine roles. Hopefully she will continue to grow and improve.

All in all, I’m okay with her winning this award. Don’t shoot me; I do think Kate’s acting is better and has shown more improvement and potential than Bernice. I liked how Kate thanked her “haters” and “critics” in her awards speech. It’s so true. Without criticism, there won’t be any improvements. Perhaps Bernice needs some of that. I’ve said it many times before, but I do believe this – Bernice is the type of actress who is loved for her hotness, charisma, and off-screen personality, not because of her actual acting abilities. Her acting is truly not up-to-par after so many years. Perhaps this is why TVB always chooses someone else to win the award.

Most Favorite Male Character – Moses Chan – Tong Chi On (Dak Dak Dei) (Heart of Greed)

I really wanted “Alfred” (Raymond) to win! I like that character more than “Dak Dak Dei”. Oh well. I am happy for Moses as “Dak Dak Dei” is still one of my favorite male characters from this year. His double-win is deserved.

Most Favorite Female Character – Susanna Kwan – Wong Sau Kam (Sai Kai) (Heart of Greed)

Along with “Dai Kai” (Lee See Kei), “Sai Kai” was the driving force and life of Heart. “Sai Kai” is the villain that everyone loves to hate. This character can really twist the audience’s emotions and make you want to keep on watching. Susanna played her deliciously. I’m content with this win. I look forward to seeing more of Susanna.

Best Series – Heart of Greed

2007 will be remembered as the year of Heart. From the start to the end, Heart was the winner. No other series [this year] has reached what this one series has accomplished. I love Heart. The script is heart-felt, engaging, and meaningful. The cast is top-notch, one of the best TVB has put together in years, and I love the leading cast members. Congratulations, Heart cast and crew! You guys deserve this!

TVB Anniversary 27 Comments »

The 40th TVB Anniversary is fast approaching. Awards will be given out soon, so it’s that time for the year again…

Best Actor

Personal Favorite(s): Moses Chan, Joe Ma

What a difference a year makes! Last year, I was pleading TVB not to give the Best Actor award to Joe and this year I’m actually rooting for him to win the award. Although I know Joe does not have a chance, I still root for him for the award because his performance in The Conquest was simply astounding! He transformed completely into “Fu Chai” and made the character so interesting. I really, really loved Joe’s performance – it was terrific. I have my hopes that Joe’s excellent acting in Conquest was not a “once in a lifetime” thing and that he will continue to carry it in future productions.

Should Win: Moses Chan

Will Win: Moses Chan

It’s obvious. This year is Moses’ year – and rightfully so. Moses finally makes a rebound in his acting. Don’t get me wrong; I’ve always been a fan of Moses since I first saw him back in 2001 with Family Man and Where the Legend Begins. It’s just that I felt his acting was disappointing and a bit stale in series like The Dance of Passion, War and Beauty, and Land of Wealth. Thankfully, the acting that made me a fan of Moses returned this year and I’m happy because of that. He is a very likable and charismatic actor and versatile with comedy and drama. His emotional scenes (especially his crying) improved tremendously in Heart of Greed (and later episodes of Land). Moses definitely deserves the Best Actor award.

Best Actress

Personal Favorite(s): Lee See Kei, Susanna Kwan, Sheren Tang

I don’t particularly fancy Sheren’s role or storyline in The Family Link, but I must applaud her performance. She did an extraordinary job (as always) and became such a believable housewife – embodying one wholly! Although Link did very well in ratings and was one of the top series this year, TVB again will not give Sheren the award. If War and Beauty and La Femme Desperado could not warrant Sheren a win, then nothing will. Nevertheless, I will always support Sheren.

I like Susanna even though Heart of Greed was the first series I’ve seen of hers. Her performance was terrific. She brought “Sai Kai” to life and made all of the arguing and plotting so exciting and entertaining. I look forward to seeing more of her.

Should Win: Lee See Kei

Will Win: Lee See Kei

I love Lee See Kei! She’s just awesome. She carries herself very well in her acting and possesses a very wise and maternal vibe. “Dai Kai” was the perfect role for her to comeback with. Lee See Kei executed her character’s lectures to perfection (after all, she preached for 1,000+ episodes in A Kindred Spirit) and made “Dai Kai” so lovable. Truthfully, “Dai Kai” is not much different from “Auntie Sin” (her role from Kindred). For versatility, we’ll have to wait for The Gem of Life in which she acts as a not-so-angelic mother for once.

This veteran truly shows the younger actresses how acting should be done and I believe Lee See Kei will be awarded for it. Her acting is exquisite.

Best Supporting Actor

Personal Favorite(s): Benz Hui, Power Chan, Ai Wai

Power Chan is ever-dependable in all of his supporting roles. He’s so great and versatile. Ai Wai is a fantastic veteran. I like watching him whenever he’s in a series.

Should Win: Benz Hui

Will Win: Benz Hui

Benz is an incredible veteran. Any series is lucky to have him as the strong, stable supporting actor. His performance in Dicey Business was one of the highlights of that series. I think TVB will award Benz this year for his continued and consistently good performances. He deserves it.

Best Supporting Actress

Personal Favorite(s): Florence Kwok, Mary Hon

I said this last year and I’ll say it again – it’s so good to have Florence back on the TVB screen! I’m liking her more because of A Kindred Spirit and I’m really enjoying her performance in Best Selling Secrets as Alvina Kong’s “evil” little sister (I’m only episode 66). Sadly, I don’t think Florence has any chance at all.

Should Win: Mary Hon

It seems like Mary is in every series. No matter how often I see her, her acting is always a welcoming sight. She can do comedy and drama equally well. I loved her hilarious performance in Heavenly In-Laws and her dramatic portrayals in War and Destiny, The Charm Beneath, Hard Fate, and many more. Mary embodies a great supporting actress in every aspect; she truly holds her ground and adds to every series she’s in. Give her an award!

Will Win: N/A

It’s anyone’s guess. This award is so unpredictable. Last year, everyone thought that this award was created for the older actresses, but unexpectedly, Shirley Yeung won it instead. Therefore, I don’t know who will get it.

Most Improved Actor

Personal Favorite(s): Stephen Wong, Wong Cho Lam

I am surprised that Wong Cho Lam was nominated. In any case, I like him. He has a real knack for comedy. He provided a lot of laughter in Heavenly In-Laws and is a delight in Best Selling Secrets. I look forward to seeing more of him.

Should Win: Stephen Wong

I like Stephen and saw potential in him beginning with Shine On You (in which he had a rather “big” role as one of the students). I’m very happy to see continued improvements from him throughout the years and it shows a lot in this year’s releases. Although his acting still needs quite a bit of polishing, I think he’s quite okay. I was impressed with his performance in The Brink of Law. Unfortunately, his status at TVB isn’t enough to win him an award sadly.

Will Win: Lai Lok Yi

Lai Lok Yi has had five series released this year with meaty roles in all five. Add in the fact that he has been with TVB for quite some time and has a part in red hot series Heart of Greed more than “warrants” his win. As should be clear from my previous posts on him, I really do not like him and fail to see improvements. After finishing The Green Grass of Home, I still remain unimpressed and find that he acts the same. I will be very surprised if Lai Lok Yi doesn’t win.

Most Improved Actress

Personal Favorite(s): Bernice Liu

Should Win: Bernice Liu

Will Win: Bernice Liu

Bernice has been a “hot favorite” to win the Most Improved Actress award since 2002. However, year after year, she fails to succeed. Six years after she made her debut as the beloved “Princess” from the long-running classic Virtues of Harmony, Bernice finally stands a very, very good chance at winning the award. I think 2007 is her year for the award. Her popularity has soared to new heights this year and her custom-made role in Steps has made her very hot. I’ve been unimpressed with Bernice after Love Bond and my fondness towards her has declined. I think she has improved a lot from the beginning, but after so many years, I think her acting is still not up-to-par and she lacks versatility. However, that doesn’t really matter. Some actresses succeed because of charm and personality alone – Bernice is that. Plus, the fact that she’s very, very attractive makes up on-screen for what she lacks in acting. With all of that being said, I still like Bernice and think she deserves the award this year.

Most Favorite Male Character

Personal Favorite(s): Joe Ma – Fu Chai, Moses Chan – Tong Chi On (Dak Dak Dei), Raymond Lam – Ching Leung (Alfred), Sunny Chan – Choi Ka Sing

“Fu Chai” is supposedly the “antagonist” in The Conquest, but I favor this character so much. The audience was able to sympathize with him because we saw pass his facade of “power” and “ruthlessness” – we got to see his vulnerability and fears. I felt for “Fu Chai”’s woes and when he committed suicide, I mourned for his death and losses. The character was just exquisitely well-written and acted.

“Dak Dak Dei” is an all-around likable, good guy. He stands by “Seung Joi Sum” and helps her through it all. He gives himself up unconditionally for others. He’s caring and kind-hearted. Not only that, but he has a sense of humor as well and will cheer anyone up. Who can hate him?

Sunny should have been nominated for his wonderful role in War and Destiny instead (he was the saving soul of that series). His character was truly great in that series – very well-written and acted. I’ve been seeing a lot of Sunny after War and I’m growing fonder of him. In fact, I like him now. I think his acting is fine. I liked him in The Green Grass of Home. It was nice how we learned how his character grew to become what he was. The back story was interesting and Sunny played the character well. I’m disappointed that TVB keeps on giving him these “dumb” roles. Sunny deserves some recognition for his hard work.

Should Win: Raymond Lam – Ching Leung (Alfred)

Raymond gave a brilliant performance as “Alfred”. His death scene was exceptionally acted. At first, I disliked the character, but he grows and learns so much as the series progresses (after “Seung Joi Sum” and “Alfred” break up for the final time)! I loved his Days Without Seung Joi Sum journal – it was so touching. In the end, “Alfred” is a good guy and truly redeems himself. He cheated and made a big mistake, but who doesn’t commit sins? What matters is that he learned and grew from the experience. By nature, he’s smart and likable and I really like the character.

Will Win: N/A

It’s a toss-up between “Dak Dak Dei” and “Alfred”.

The reason I pick “Alfred” over “Dak Dak Dei” is because I think “Alfred” is realistic and relatable. “Dak Dak Dei” is too fictional and unbelievable (even though I like him).

Most Favorite Female Character

Personal Favorite(s): Esther Kwan – Wong Ka Lam, Lee See Kei – Ling Hau (Dai Kai), Linda Chung – Seung Joi Sum, Tavia Yeung – Tam Chu Mei, Susanna Kwan – Wong Sau Kam (Sai Kai)

“Seung Joi Sum”, “Seung Joi Sum”… I just love that name! Not only is it cute, but it’s a memorable name. Although “Seung Joi Sum” has her moments where she can be annoying, as a whole, the female protagonist of Heart of Greed is hard to dislike. As is the case with “Alfred”, she grows a lot after they break up. She matures into an independent, confident, smart, and strong woman. It’s a nice ride watching her transformation and Linda plays the role quite well. Her character and relationships are all so touching, memorable, and well-written. “Seung Joi Sum” was made for Linda to act and is her breakthrough and “most improved” role. It’s too bad she couldn’t win the Most Improved Actress award for this role this year instead of last. People would definitely root and support her win if that were the case. Oh well… what’s done is done.

Tavia’s “Tam Chu Mei” was a highlight from Dicey Business for me. Her hilarious character and great performance (and wonderful storyline/chemistry with Bosco Wong) was one of the few things I liked about Dicey. Her character was ditzy and selfish, but funny and entertaining to watch.

Should Win: Esther Kwan – Wong Ka Lam

Esther is the reason to watch Best Selling Secrets. I’ve said it many times in the past and I’ll say it again – she is the life for that sitcom. Without her, I wouldn’t even bother and I believe ratings will be even lower. I love her character! “Wong Ka Lam” is smart, funny, cool, and lovable. She plays the character deliciously well and it is a great “comeback” role. I really, really want Esther to win this award. Sadly, Secrets‘ poor reception makes that pretty much impossible.

Will Win: N/A

Someone in Heart of Greed will win the award – that I’m sure of. Lee See Kei may win both Best Actress and this award or TVB may choose to be “fair” and give this to Susanna. Although an antagonist, ironically, “Sai Kai” still stands a good chance at winning. I guess you can say she’s the villain the audience loves to hate. Linda’s “Seung Joi Sum” is a dark horse for this award.

Best Series

Personal Favorite(s): Heart of Greed, The Conquest

The Conquest was intelligently-scripted and brilliantly structured with breath-taking cinematography and captivating performances. It definitely brought history from thousands of years ago to life in modern days. The series lagged and was rather uninteresting in the middle parts, but as a whole, I liked it a lot.

Should Win: Heart of Greed

Will Win: Heart of Greed

Last year, La Femme Desperado was the clear winner from the start and this year, Heart of Greed is the same way. There is no other winner for Best Series other than Heart. The publicity, exposure, hype, and discussion of this series exceeds all other. Heart is engaging, exciting, and well-scripted. As the name suggests, it has “heart” and I believe that is why it touched so many people. Although the script was nothing new and not very compelling, it was still an excellent and entertaining series. I think Heart will be the only series that the audience will remember from 2007 in future years – validating its status as a classic and a win for Best Series.

Your thoughts: Who do you think will win? Who are your favorites? Who do you support? Or are the TVB anniversary awards so corrupt that you could care less about it?

comic tease – 39th anniversary edition

Comics, TVB Anniversary 11 Comments »

Comic Tease might possibly be a new on-going feature at TVB Musings if the response to this special 39th Anniversary edition is good. Basically this is the “pilot.” If it flies, a new series will have been born. If not, then it will just be a stand-alone feature. It’s up to you guys. I hope you guys like it. I think it’s cute and humorous. I had been meaning to do this post for a while, but didn’t get a chance to until now, so pardon it being a bit “outdated.” Anyways, enjoy and let me know what you think.

I thought it was so sweet of Tavia Yeung to raise her hand in a “presenting” manner towards Linda Chung while the camera was on them as they waited to hear Michael Mui announce the Most Improved Actress winner. It was so cute to see Tavia hug Linda. I didn’t know they were such good friends. I guess Heart of Greed brought them together. I wonder if TVB intentionally sat Linda, Tavia, Leila Tong, and Selena Li next to each other in the same row. Last year, Bernice Liu and Niki Chow sat together and Bernice gave Niki a hug when she won too. Anyways, I really liked how Tavia acted.

I loved this shot of Kingdom Yuen smiling so widely and proudly. You can sense how happy and proud she is for Linda. She watched Linda mature, so in a sense she is like her “aunt.” The Virtues of Harmony II family were all very protective of Linda because she was just 19 when she stepped onto the set to film. Linda was really grateful to have them all support and help her so much. It makes me all warm and happy knowing that the bonds extended off-screen – that is partially why I love Virtues so much – the feeling I get from it is very sincere and endearing.

The first awkward moment of the night! I thought it was so funny how Linda looked all confused and then realized he wanted to give her a congratulatory hug first. I hate how TVB didn’t make a Most Improved clip show for Linda. I was so angry because I really looked forward to seeing it. If they could make one for Niki when she won last year with only two series, why couldn’t they do one for Linda who has four series under her belt? It’s so unfair. I wanted to see Linda’s progress from a Miss Chinese International winner to her debut in Virtues and then her improvements in her succeeding series. It was really disappointing. However, she looked very angelic and sincere during her speech, so I’m not complaining.

Who is this lady who presented with Yuen Wah? She is the worst presenter ever. Presenters are supposed to step back from the stand and smile as the winner gives his/her speech… but this lady… She stood there at the stand while both Kenny Wong and Shirley Yeung were giving their speeches. What was even worse was that her face looked so sour and bored – so rude!

Charmaine Sheh’s face was so black during the Most Favorite Female Character award that it was unbelievable. It was so obvious she wasn’t expecting it and didn’t want the award because she thought she would lose out on the Best Actress award since she won this award. I wish Charmaine had carried herself better. I mean, come on, it is still an award.

Liza Wang is hilarious. I loved how she teased all of the top 5 Best Actor nominees. It was great. Bowie Lam looked so pissed at her comment that his speech was not too “clear” in The Dance of Passion and yet he was criticizing Moses Chan for not speaking clearly enough. He just kept this tight, forced smile and nodded his head as if he was joking along with her and being a “good sport.” It was just so funny. Bowie deserved it – he was being too cocky. “Ah jeh” surely put him in his place; she doesn’t just have a reputation.

I couldn’t believe that Shirley perked up her smile when she noticed that the camera was on her while they were showing the top 5 Best Actress nominees as Roger Kwok was about to announce the winner. It was so cheesy that I laughed. Charmaine obviously thought she lost the award because she had won Most Favorite Female Character already, but alas, she got a huge surprise.

Linda was shaking hands and chatting with someone (perhaps Leila or Selena?) and then she wiped her eyes and was creating a “commotion.” Kiki Sheung was looking at her to see what the fuss was about. Natalie Tong, too, looked at Linda. Maybe it’s the angle… but Natalie’s glance at Linda didn’t look too friendly.

I thought it was so funny how Tavia started feeling her face and was probably commenting to Linda how oily her face was. She then takes out some tissues to dab away at the oil and shares a piece with her good friend, Linda. It was cute seeing them both dab at their faces. Niki Chow was then joking with Linda and Tavia too. Everyone else looked so bored, including Sharon Chan. It was a long night, so it’s understandable that they all got restless. Awards shows are pretty boring, especially if you’re a part of it and walk home empty-handed.

TVB Anniversary, Thoughts 15 Comments »

After a month’s wait and endless voting, the winners of TVB’s 39th Anniversary Awards are here!

Best Actor – Kevin Cheng (Under The Canopy of Love)

Oh… my… god! I was shocked when Kevin’s name was in the top 5 for both Most Improved Actor and Best Actor. I knew something off was going to happen. Kevin wasn’t going to win Most Improved Actor as expected. Apparently, Miss Lok felt that that award wasn’t “enough” for her favorite boy toy, so she decided to give him Best Actor instead. I can’t say I’m surprised. I knew that Kevin held a high position at TVB because of Miss Lok’s fondness of him, but I couldn’t believe they would give him Best Actor so soon. He only got popular because of Under the Canopy of Love. Truthfully speaking, I thought Bowie Lam would win again because of his over-confidence. Even though I don’t like Bowie much and hated his cocky attitude about being so sure of winning Best Actor a second time, I would rather he have won over Kevin. It is such a disappointment that Bobby Au-Yeung didn’t even make the top 5. At least TVB listened to me and didn’t give it to Joe Ma… maybe I should be “happy” they answered that request. But Kevin? I’m appalled. I don’t like him (as most of you know) and TVB is making it even harder for me to like him by pushing him so high when he’s not that great.

Best Actress – Charmaine Sheh (Maiden’s Vow)

This is not surprising. It was either going to be Myolie Wu or Charmaine for Best Actress. Ada Choi and Sheren Tang didn’t have a chance. I haven’t seen Charmaine’s performance in Maiden’s Vow, so I can’t comment whether or not she deserved to win for her roles in that series. I can say, though, that I’m glad she didn’t win for The Dance of Passion because her performance as “Chun Fan” was so lack-luster. For me, the best performance Charmaine ever gave to this day was as “Lai Shun Fung” in Country Spirit. She surely put her “ability to cry in 30 seconds” to use during her acceptance speech when she claimed she didn’t believe she’d win. For that – I believe she deserved the award.

Best Supporting Actor – Kenny Wong (The Dance of Passion)

I was hoping that Wayne Lai would win, but sadly, he didn’t get any recognition. I’m indifferent towards Kenny. He’s not bad, but somehow, I can’t feel anything from his performances. He was drab in The Dance of Passion, but he was acceptable in War and Beauty. It was pretty obvious that Kenny was going to win because his popularity surged thanks to the many shirtless scenes in Dance. I just didn’t believe TVB would award him Best Supporting Actor just because he was the most popular of all the candidates…

Best Supporting Actress – Shirley Yeung (Always Ready)

So this was why Shirley was hopping around getting molested as she tried to be “sexy” and “grown up” and saying that she wanted to get Best Supporting Actress and was “hopeful” for it. It seems like she and TVB had already “arranged” for her to win. This is such an insult to all of the wonderful veteran actresses who were nominated. I’m sorry, but aside from the fact that her role in Always Ready couldn’t walk, Shirley still acted the same as she always did with the shouting, exaggerated and fake expressions and mannerism, and the same incredibly irritating role. If it’s any consolation, however, this means that TVB now considers Shirley a “supporting actress” – which is news to rejoice to! We no longer have to suffer with her “leading.”

Most Improved Actor – Kenneth Ma (The Herbalist’s Manual, La Femme Desperado, Love Guaranteed, To Grow With Love)

Maybe it’s the roles that Kenneth gets, but I’ve never liked him very much. He annoys me somehow. The only time I kind of liked him was in Wong Fei Hung – Master of Kung Fu when his character was actually pretty decent. Somehow, I can’t click with him and he doesn’t make me feel for his characters. I wish Sammul Chan had won this award instead. Luckily, Steven Ma and Michael Tse didn’t get this award. It would have been such a slap to their faces!

Most Improved Actress – Linda Chung (Always Ready, The Biter Bitten, Forensic Heroes)

Between the two Virtues of Harmony beauties, who could have ever imagined that Linda would win Most Improved Actress before Bernice Liu? I’ve said before that I didn’t want Linda to win because she’s not deserving of the award yet and I honestly do believe that. I prayed and hoped that she wouldn’t because I know the haters will have a field day with this probably until next year. Linda will definitely be the target of criticism and I hoped she could have avoided this by not taking the award this year. Everything pointed the award to her as she was the “strongest contender.” Alas, she did win and being a fan, I can only support her and congratulate her for the win.

I can’t say I’m “happy” because I don’t think she should have gotten it, but then again, I wonder if I would have been “upset” if she lost after being such a “hot favorite.” I really don’t know. My feelings were and remain conflicted. I just hope that Linda will be able to prove herself competent with her upcoming releases. This is the only way she can assuage the “upset” of all the haters. I have faith in her.

Obviously, the stakes have been raised for Linda and she will have to work much, much harder. Within 2 years, she has filmed 8 series (over 200 episodes), attracted the eyes of numerous advertisers and sponsors, and now she has won Most Improved Actress. She’s gone way up shockingly fast and now she will have to prove that she has what it takes to stay around. She’s pretty much done and accomplished everything that every newcomer aspires to do in such a short period of time. It makes me wonder what’s next for Linda… I’m glad she admitted in her acceptance speech that she still has much to work on and I know for sure that one day she can mature into a great actress. She already has had a great start and she is willing to learn and likes to act. For that, I am happy to be her fan and support her all the way.

It’s going to be tough dealing with all of the criticism, but in the minds of many people, this award already had Linda’s name on it, so it doesn’t make much of a difference now that she actually won it after all. Linda looked absolutely beautiful at the awards ceremony. She plays the whole pure and innocent thing wonderfully.

Most Favorite Male Character – Steven Ma – Seung Chi (Safe Guards)

Thank god TVB didn’t let Steven walk home empty handed! “Seung Chi” is my most favorite male character of the year, so I am very pleased with this. I expected Raymond Lam to win because these “character awards” are supposed to be “consolation awards.” Luckily, that didn’t happen. If Charmaine Sheh could pick up Best Actress and Most Favorite Female Character, Steven should have been able to do the same. Unfortunately, he hasn’t enticed the eyes of Miss Lok. However, it’s great that he won this award! It’s awesome news. Hopefully he can bag Best Actor next year.

Most Favorite Female Character – Charmaine Sheh – Ngai Ju Fung, Wong Jee Gwan, Bak Wai Jan, Dai Sze Ga (Maiden’s Vow)

Poor Myolie Wu – she gained a bunch of weight to play “Fat Tin” and didn’t even get a consolation prize. In Hollywood, she would have gotten something for her great sacrifice, but in Hong Kong, she has gotten nothing but criticism for “making fat people look bad” in To Grow With Love. On the plus side though, at least she gained cup sizes and hey – that’s a pretty decent trade off.

Who would have expected that Charmaine would pick up not only Best Actress but Most Favorite Female Character as well?

Best Series – La Femme Desperado

I’m upset that Michael Tse and Sheren Tang didn’t pick up any awards of their own. I can’t say that I’m disappointed because I knew their chances weren’t great. Still, I was hopeful… However, La Femme Desperado winning Best Series is much in part due to them, so it’s very nice. Femme deservingly won this award and I’m so happy it did. My prediction for this category was spot-on. There was no other winner for this award besides Femme.

predicting awards

TVB Anniversary, Thoughts 30 Comments »

In July, I predicted successfully that Aimee Chan would take home the Miss Hong Kong 2006 title. Let’s see if I can do the same in regards to TVB’s 39th Anniversary Awards.

Best Actor

Personal Favorite(s): Steven Ma, Michael Tse

Why Michael isn’t nominated for Best Supporting Actor instead is beyond me. I can understand the logic for him being nominated for leading actor though because he is one of the significant characters of La Femme Desperado and did a superb job. However, I can’t help but wish he was in the Best Supporting Actor category instead so that he has a much higher chance of winning an award. Michael has been a great actor all of these years and I’m so happy he’s finally getting recognized! He was simply hilarious for years in Virtues of Harmony as the lazy, sickly, and pushover “Ah Yuet” and compelling as “Cheap Man” this year in Femme.

Should Win: Steven Ma

Steven stole Safe Guards. Without him, it wouldn’t have been as good. He gives “Seung Chi” so much strength and soul. The viewer is captivated whenever he appears on screen. I’ve always liked watching Steven and liked him even more after he became a member of my Virtues of Harmony family – bringing such reborn life into it with his charming role of “Ah San.”

Will Win: Bobby Au-Yeung

I think Bobby will win because of Forensic Heroes’s great success, but like most people, I’m indifferent towards this award because I know my favorite won’t win. Don’t get me wrong – Bobby is one of my favorite actors and I will be happy if he wins, but I just don’t feel very “excited” about Best Actor since it’s so under-focused and not competitive at all. It depends on who’s hot and who TVB feels like giving it to that year. Whatever TVB does – please don’t give it to Joe Ma!

Best Actress

Everyone thought that the The Dance of Passion ladies would rule this category this year just like the War and Beauty concubines in 2004. However, this is not the case because of Dance’s lackluster performance. My top 5 prediction? Sheren Tang, Charmaine Sheh, Myolie Wu, Ada Choi, and Yoyo Mung.

Personal Favorite(s): Sheren Tang

Should Win: Sheren Tang

I still think Sheren should have been awarded for her magnificent performance as “Yu Fei” in War and Beauty and I resent the fact that she didn’t get it. Sheren is the reason to watch La Femme Desperado (along with Michael Tse). She emits such a strong aura and commands all of her roles so well! I loved “Hilda” and I think Sheren deserves this award, but I know TVB won’t give it to her. No matter – Sheren is above that and she doesn’t really care, but as a fan, I just want her to receive it for her consistently fine work.

Will Win: Charmaine Sheh

This award will be a battle between Myolie and Charmaine. I think it’s too “early” for Myolie to win, but people who sacrifice for their roles are usually awarded… It’s hard to say if TVB will hand the Best Actress statue to Myolie or Charmaine. However, I’m thinking Charmaine unless To Grow With Love does extremely well and Myolie blows up. Charmaine’s series usually falter in ratings and truthfully, her acting hasn’t impressed me as of late; she’s been very bland and mechanical. She used to be really good in the early 2000’s with her roles in Country Spirit and the likes, but these days… I know Charmaine fans are ready to kill me, but that’s my honest opinion. Still, I’m fine with Charmaine, but I really wish she (like Moses Chan) would return to her former greatness.

Best Supporting Actor

Personal Favorite(s): Ha Yu, Wayne Lai, Cheung Chi Kwong, Lee Ka Sing

Ha Yu was excellent in When Rules Turn Loose – very endearing. Cheung Chi Kwong and Lee Ka Sing are always so dependable and deliver on their performances.

Should Win: Wayne Lai

Wayne Lai is consistently great and amazing. He is so versatile and makes every role his own. I’m so happy TVB has him as a strong supporting actor. I really hope TVB will give him the award, but I don’t think so…

Will Win: Raymond Cho

Raymond Cho found a lot of popularity this year, especially with his role in Forensic Heroes. I think he will win (although I have to say I’m indifferent towards him).

Best Supporting Actress

Personal Favorite(s): Helen Ma, Florence Kwok, Rain Lau, Rebecca Chan

While watching The Dance of Passion, I could not believe the actress who played “Gwai Laan” was the same one who gave me endless laughter and entertainment as the greedy, bitchy, and hilarious “Auntie Chuen.” But, it was indeed Helen Ma – she is that good. She gave such a creepy, threatening, and fierce performance in Dance. Rain Lau is such an underrated actress and I hope she gets some substantial roles soon. She definitely deserves an award from TVB, but she hasn’t found the role (or rather TVB hasn’t given her the role) to win yet. Still, she’s great with her versatility in comedy and drama. Rebecca Chan is so good. Although she had no lines in Dance, her eyes and subtle expressions spoke for themselves – brilliant!

Should Win: Florence Kwok

I’m so happy to see Florence Kwok back in the TVB world. I hope she stays. Florence acts not for fame or money, but for the art of acting itself. She is always so good and I think she deserves an award (something long overdue).

Will Win: N/A

There’s no “hot favorite” this year and it’s hard to tell who TVB will give it to. Natalie Tong is currently winning the poll for this award and I’m fine if she gets it… but I’d rather see Natalie win for Most Improved Actress or something.

Most Improved Actor

Personal Favorite(s): Sammul Chan

Should Win: Sammul Chan

I’m really surprised by how much I’ve grown to like Sammul. I used to think his performances were so pretentious, but he has come a long way. I really enjoy watching him now.

Will Win: Kevin Cheng

Those of you who “know” me know that I do not like Kevin, but the award for Most Improved Actor has Kevin’s name written all over it. The popularity of Under The Canopy of Love and Kevin’s soaring profile in the media tips the scales much in his favor. Besides, Miss Lok loves him – what other reason does TVB need to give it to him? I don’t like watching Kevin and don’t see what’s so great about him.

Most Improved Actress

Obviously, this is the only award I really care about this year, but then again… not so much. Last year, I believed that Most Improved Actress would have a lot of competition in 2006. Sadly, there isn’t a “strong” contender or much competition for this award this year.

Personal Favorite(s): Linda Chung

“What! Not all Linda’s for this category?” That’s what a lot of you are probably thinking. The truth is, I do love Linda, but I do not believe she is good enough for this award yet.

She impressed me so much with her debut as “Ah Lam” in Virtues of Harmony II because she was so surprisingly natural, effectively portraying many aspects of the role’s split personality and charmingly making “Ah Lam” come alive from the pages of the script. Linda has a lot of potential and I eagerly awaited her post-Virtues roles. She delivered with Always Ready. Her crying scenes were so touching, but her performance was only good in half of the series. She falters and comes off too still in the GFS scenes in the first half and becomes comfortable with the role only after her romance with Ekin Cheng commences and more of her personal story is told. With The Biter Bitten, Linda lights up the screen with her incredibly cute and sweet role of “Dan Dan.” She looked beautiful in that series as well. I seriously believe that Shirley Yeung gave Linda “acting tips” when she played “Ding Ding” in Forensic Heroes – either that of Linda modeled after Shirley. Her mannerism was so forced, exaggerated, and reminded of Shirley’s (irritating and fake) style of “acting.” It didn’t help that “Ding Ding” is like a Shirley role… meaning the only role that Shirley can play. It was refreshing to see Linda finally in a young role and she was quite cute and funny, but I can’t help but feel she tried too hard.

Her recent bad press of NG’s and lack of experience and professionalism has also disheartened me a bit. As a result, I don’t think Linda should receive the award just yet. I want Linda to win with a breakthrough role that showcases her acting abilities and improvement. Thus far, she hasn’t had it. Still, I support Linda and if she wins (and I’m hoping she doesn’t), I will be happy for her, but I rather she doesn’t this year. She still has much to learn, grow, and improve on before she should get it.

Should Win: Selena Li

Selena has really impressed me with her acting and improvements. Although she’s not on my “favorites” list, I have to admit she is maturing into a nice actress and deserves the award. If To Grow With Love does well and Selena becomes more popular from her role in that series, then I think TVB will give it to her.

Will Win: N/A

I really don’t know. The strongest candidate is Linda and all arrows point to her for winning, but… Tavia Yeung is leading the polls right now for this award, but I doubt TVB will give it to her a second time. I hope TVB won’t be so “outrageous” and hand the award to Toby Leung (my worst fear) because of her father’s power/position. Sharon Chan? I don’t think so and hope not. Leila Tong? Nope; she’s not under TVB management and until she signs, she won’t ever win anything. Natalie Tong is good, but I don’t think TVB will give her the award. All in all, this award is most unpredictable and I both anticipate and fear the result because my feelings about Most Improved Actress are so conflicted.

Most Favorite Male Character

Personal Favorite(s): Steven Ma – Seung Chi, Michael Tse – Man King Leung, Bowie Lam – Yim Man Hei

“Cheap Man” is one character you grow from hating to loving. La Femme Desperado develops this character so well and it is portrayed impeccably by Michael. The more you learn about his character, the more you understand, forgive, and like him. I also love the romance he shares with “Hilda” (Sheren Tang) – a very unique and touching relationship. “Yim Man Hei” has many layers to his character and I found it so fascinating to watch and learn more about this unpredictable man. Like “Cheap Man,” he starts off so repulsive, but by the end, when everything is stripped away and he is who he is… he’s someone who’s so compassionate and human.

Should Win: Steven Ma – Seung Chi

“Seung Chi” is the epitome of what every man aspires to be. He’s smart, brave, and righteous. Mind you – he’s not “perfect.” He has his flaws and insecurities, but he works so hard for the better of his family (no matter how badly they treat him) that it’s admirable. This character makes Safe Guards and he is my favorite male character of the year – excellently written and charismatically acted by Steven.

Will Win: Raymond Lam – Chai Foon

Girls love “Chai Foon” because he’s so charming and does many sweet things for “Ko Ling” (Melissa Ng), but I dislike “Siu Chai.” The role is irritating and poorly written. However, Raymond did a great job with the role and he finally broke his “ratings curse” with La Femme Desperado. I think TVB will give Ray the award as a consolation prize since they value him a lot.

Most Favorite Female Character

Personal Favorite(s): Sheren Tang – Hilda, Niki Chow – Ko Yat Sze, Ada Choi – Chiu Yuk

Niki makes “Yat Sze” come alive. She is so cute and charming in Under the Canopy of Love that she is a big reason why I ended up loving it. Niki’s acting is so good and she just bubbles with so much charisma. Ada is one of the better things about The Dance of Passion. She dominates her scenes and gives it so much depth and heart. As a viewer, you grow to like her the best out of all the Dance ladies. Her role is similar to “Yu Fei” from War and Beauty.

Should Win: Sheren Tang – Hoi Kiu (Hilda)

Like “Cheap Man,” “Hilda” is both written and portrayed brilliantly. I love her power, intelligence, and determination. She is really a “lui keung yan.” Although she depicts herself as fierce, “Hilda” is scared of being hurt and she’s not so secure or brave as she makes herself out to be. Sheren portrayed “Hilda”’s multi-faceted personality excellently and I loved watching this female character the most this year.

Will Win: Myolie Wu – Ho Mei Tin

If Myolie doesn’t win Best Actress (and my gut feeling tells me she won’t), then she will most definitely win this award. Her image as “Fat Tin” is super adorable and I think she will be the reason to watch To Grow With Love. I’m pretty sure “Fat Tin” will be this year’s “Li Siu Ho” and Myolie will gain a lot of popularity from it.

Best Series

Personal Favorite(s): When Rules Turn Loose, Safe Guards, La Femme Desperado, Under The Canopy of Love

Should Win: La Femme Desperado

Will Win: La Femme Desperado

Hands down the series of the year is La Femme Desperado. Safe Guards had a superb script too, but ratings-wise, Femme is the winner. Hong Kong loves this series. Femme is wonderfully and brilliantly daring, scandalous, shocking, and provocative. It reminds of Desperate Housewives and Sex and the City in several ways. TVB really did a great job with Femme. I hope it wins; it deserves to and it should.

Your thoughts: Who do you think will win? Who are your favorites? Who do you support? Or are the TVB anniversary awards so corrupt that you could care less about it?
