spotlight: “time before time”

“Holding The One in Front Tightly” [抱緊眼前人] – Anita Mui
(Themesong from TVB series Time Before Time)
Time Before Time was a hit series when it was aired on TVB back in 1997 with lots of praises and an average rating of 36 pts and peaking at an impressive 45 pts in its final week. It propelled the status of Gordon Lam as a lead actor and re-launched Kathy Chow’s brief comeback at TVB. In many people’s mind [at least those who have seen it], Time is a “timeless” classic – a beautiful, romantic, and memorable story that was well-produced.
Going into Time, I had a lot of expectations and hoped that it would live up to its title as a “classic”. I am happy to say that it deserves its reputation. Often times, some series can be overrated. However, Time is a remarkable TVB series and definitely a highlight work in TVB’s many years.

About the story
Time tells the story of a romance that breaks through time and space. The main couple faced many difficulties before getting together, but then they were mysteriously poisoned. This led to the death of the female protagonist, who became a ghost. 20 years later, she is released [from her residence in a haunted umbrella] and wants to find the whereabouts of her lover. It turns out he has been reincarnated and is already in love with another woman… Gradually, this man begins to recall the past and falls in love with her again. Through the course of the series, we learn the truth behind the mystery that caused the tragic deaths of the couple, which led to them being separated – with one in the ghost and the other in the mortal realm. We also see the heartbreaking ache the main couple feels for one another, as well as the tricky love triangle between two humans and a ghost…

I was hooked on Time’s story from the beginning to end. It was very interesting listening to Kathy tell the story of how she and Gordon met, fell in love, got together, and struggled to be together in the past. Despite the back-story being rather typical and even clichéd [a maid falling in love with a rich young master], I was still entertained watching the flashback scenes.

For once, the love triangle was not annoying. I felt for all parties involved and it was truly inevitable. Of course, the romance between Gordon and Kathy [being the main couple] was more touching and romantic. I was very satisfied with the ending of the love triangle. Things were handled well and realistically. As much as I would have liked to see Gordon be with Kathy, it’s physically infeasible and unrealistic since she was a ghost. Also, he was married with Florence Kwok already and he also loves her.
In that lifetime, he could only be with Florence. I was happy to see them grow old together and have a happy family. Of course, everyone – meaning the audience – wants to see Gordon and Kathy together. TVB did not let us down and we got our wish. The ending was so touching with Gordon and Kathy finally being able to be together in modern times. After so many struggles and so many years, true love is reunited. I loved the touch with the umbrella at the end. It really brings everything together; the umbrella is the single most defining image/symbol from Time.

I enjoyed Time very much because it had a great balance and mix. It was funny, sweet, romantic, endearing, and touching all at once. All of the characters were enjoyable to watch [besides the antagonists of course]. I felt the storyline was well-structured and paced. The series is entertaining from beginning to end and does a great job sustaining the audience’s interest. It is an excellent and very special series – different from other ones that TVB has produced.
About the performances
Gordon Lam – Gordon is not your typical leading actor, but his acting is great and I really like watching him. His performance in Time did not disappoint – not that I was expecting it to. He was hilarious and very likable. I cracked up because of his antics and laziness at the beginning. I was later touched by how devoted he was to Kathy’s character. It was so enjoyable watching his character grow during the course of the series. He effectively portrayed his two roles distinctly and he had great chemistry with both Kathy and Florence.

Kathy Chow – I’m not a fan of Kathy, but I quite liked her in this series. I thought she was pretty in her various costumes and she did her character justice. At times, her acting was dull and weak, but “Siu Foo Yung” is such a fool-proof character that people just adore because of her kind heart and innocence. She matched very well with Gordon. She was so funny as the naive ghost at the beginning of the series. Her history is heart-breaking and it’s really sad to see her try so hard to repress her feelings for Gordon’s character. I was moved by her love and dedication to Gordon.
Florence Kwok – I really like Florence and it was good to see her in a meaty role. Her character had a good heart, had spunk, and was at times funny. I was so scared that they were going to make her character turn “evil” later on in the series because TVB writers have the tendency to do that with roles that are “in the way” of the main couple. Although Florence’s character did some not-so-nice things, her actions were understandable. She was worried about losing her husband. I was touched by her love for Gordon; they had really good chemistry.
Kenneth Chan – “Che Daat Fu” is a perfectly nice guy with no flaws. He stands by and helps “Siu Foo Yung” in any way that he can. He knows that she doesn’t love him, but this doesn’t stop him from loving her. It should be touching and I should root for his character, but I couldn’t feel anything for him. I thought Kenneth was wooden and failed the character. Also, call me biased but I have a negative impression of him because he [as in the character he played] raped “Siu Lung Lui” in Return of Condor Heroes 1995.

The supporting cast was really good. They all contributed something – often comedy – to the scenes. I loved Law Lok Lam; I think this is my favorite performance from him. He is so hilarious! I loved how his character was a spoof on the triad bosses and how he was so scared of ghosts. I enjoyed Johnny Tang’s romance with “Luk Hiu Tung”. He was funny and it was entertaining watching him grow. All in all, the cast of Time was perfectly cast and everyone effectively carried out their roles (with the exception of Kenneth).
Final thoughts
From the moment you hear the haunting themesong sung by the late Anita Mui, you know you are watching a classic. Seriously, the themesong sets the mood perfectly for the series and is such a beautiful song. Time Before Time is one of the most deeply romantic and memorable series that I have ever seen from TVB. I highly recommend this classic. It is the best romantic ghost story that TVB has produced.
The relationship between Gordon and Kathy will pull at your heartstrings. They have to go through so many struggles and you can truly feel their love through the screen. You know a love story is effective when you can feel the love between an actor and a dog. In one part of the series, Kathy wants Gordon to move on with his “real life” rather than being stuck in the past and loving her, so she tricks him into thinking she has reincarnated into a dog. Gordon takes the dog as Kathy. The way he interacts with the dog is just so touching! You can feel how deep their relationship is in those scenes. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see what happens to him when he loses this dog.
Watch Time for its wonderful and unique storyline that will capture your heart and attention. It is all you could ask for in a series and more. If you’re looking for drama, romance, comedy, supernatural, mystery and/or all the above, then look no further than Time. It is a solid and thoroughly enjoyable series that leaves a lasting impression and keeps you at the edge of your seat wanting to watch the next episode. The touching ending will just put a smile on your face. Despite a low budget, it proves that glitz and glamour mean nothing without a meaningful and excellent script. It is a top-notch and rare production by TVB.

I love this series! I remember watching this when I was younger, and I kept watching it over and over because it has a mixture of everything. I love the idea of a ghost, trapped in an umbrella, who get to wear pretty clothes just by burning paper outfits. The storyline was very touching and sweet: love is forever and unbreakable. There were so many memorable scenes so I won’t list them all. Overall, I agree with Metal that this series is excellent. Totally highly rated. Now I want to go watch it again. Lol.

Glad to see this serie kept up with your expectations! How long did it take you to finish this serie? I remember I watched this serie when I was young, and it was on cable/satellite so I watched one episode per weekday, and man it was so addicting! It really has a great mixture of comedy, romance, mystery, and drama. It is too bad TVB had not produce any successful ghost stories after that. This is a good example that a serie can be low-budget and the cast not as famous, but yet can still be a classic on its own.
I think Gordan Lam is a great TVB actor, and I like his series more than his movies, so it is a pity he seems to have a big dislike for acting in TVB series ever since he started acting in movies. Even though I don’t think he was seen as a TVB Big Brother, I always thought he was up
there among Gallen, Bobby, Michael Tao back then. I really hope maybe one day he would come back if he is offered a good serie, but maybe the chances are slim.
I also liked the triangle with Florence and Kathy. It was good the way it worked out, but I was always curious, if Gordan, Kenneth, and Kathy reincarnated and had fate with each other, then where is Florence’s reincarnated self?
Btw, thanks for posting the song up. I’m listening it on repeat. It’s truly a beautiful and touching song.

I also remember watching the series when i was younger. Though the details are quite fuzzy, I of course, remember the ending. The series was truly terrific. Gordon is a very good actor, he has given such good performances throughout the years in TVB series. I hope he succeeds in the movie industry!
Still waiting on more of your thoughts for tai Chi!

Whoa a blast from the past. I still remember humming to the creepy old song from this drama to scare my little brother.

Isn’t there an HK movie with a similar premise? I think Leslie Cheung is in it. And I think Anita Mui as well?
Anyway, the themesong was timed perfectly to this post for me. I started playing it at the beginning and it wrapped up just as I was finishing reading the post. ^^

I’m glad you reviewed this classic, metal. The concept of the ghost character and Anita Mui’s voice created the overall eerily atmosphere. And somehow listening to Anita’s voice again, I’m a little spooked.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I’m glad you guys love this series as much as me.
It is truly a classic.
Think – Yes! Definitely watch it.
Jadedreams – Gosh… it’s been so long since I finished watching this series that I can’t remember!
If I had to guess, I would say 3 weeks. I think I was pretty busy when I watched this series a few months ago.
It’s pretty unlikely that Gordon will ever act for TVB again. He said some very harsh things about them. Even if he wanted to, I don’t think TVB would take him back simply because of the “grudge” between them. It’s more likely for him to act in mainland series if he chooses to go back to the television route in the future.
I think Florence wasn’t reincarnated yet simply because she lived longer than Gordon? When he died, she was still alive and “well” for the most part. Therefore, I think she reincarnated later than them and therefore they did not know each other in modern times. However, that’s just my guess.
QuackieChau – Yes, there is a movie version as well as an opera version. From what I’ve read at another site, the story was based on a true story? I don’t think Time is an “original” story that TVB wrote themselves.
Anonymous – That song gives me the chills. Haha.

how funny! i just re-watched this series just now. the TVB series in the 90s were so much better… for the most part. i was wondering, would you know where i could find the old songs sung in the series? like the one that the ghost girl likes best, and the one the four-eyed kid wrote to the ghost girl… i really found it beautiful

This was one of my favorite dramas. Now that you posted this I want to rewatch it all over again.
My mom always complains that TVB doesn’t make good series like the old days anymore =/

Great post! Now i feel like re-watching this all over again.. Can still remember alot of memorable scenes. esp the first few episodes, where Gordan and everyone freaked out.. haha.. and there were alot of memorable and funny lines from Gordan, esp when Kathy was looking at him after he fainted. He was like “I am not handsome! why must you look at me’.
totally hilarious. And of course, the part where he was playing the piano and he remembered parts of his past life.. was very touching.
Maybe it’s me, our those we grew up watching tvb 1990s era. I feel that current production is somewhat lacking. Not sure exactly what it is. There is smthing about the plot, actors/actresses of the past that captures you more than the current batch.
This is definitely my favourite ‘ancient’ tvb story. Simple, yet it evokes alot of feelings, thoughts from you.

Tito – Sorry! I don’t know where you can find the songs.
I only have the themesong.
xox – Well, yeah classics are hard to come by and produce. I do think TVB is able to churn out a few gems now and then… just not very often.
xin zhi zhu – Glad you love this series too!
I think series in the past are grander because of the cast and focus on plot and substance — not flashy superficial things. TVB was also a lot more dedicated to detail and producing great series back then. Now, they care more for “quantity” rather than “quality”.
Most TVB series now are led by the younger generation which aren’t established actors/actresses yet and are still “learning”. Hence, we get a “grand” feeling with older productions compared to contemporary series even though ironically cinematography is much better now than before.

Hi! I finally found a great review on this show. My all time favorite !
There’s one part of this show that I couldn’t make sense of and I hope that you would be able to clear my doubts.
At the end of Time, Gordan died and reunite with Kathy. And the next thing we knew, the scene changes to that of a hospital with 2 pregnant women rushed to the emergency room. After that, the nurses came out and said that there was a boy and a girl. The nurse even commented that the two babies ‘yao yuan’, meaning had ‘fate’ (Sorry for the bad translation, cant find a better word)? From this part, I assumed that the baby boy was Gordan’s re-carnation and the baby girl was Kathy’s re-carnation.
However, I was shocked to find out that Kathy and Gordan were grown up adults visiting their sisters in the next scene. And also, their sisters had just gave birth to a boy and a girl at the same time. So what exactly happened here? Are the babies from the scene in the above paragraph Kathy and Gordan, and the second scene was like years later which they met again in the hospital?? Or is it the babies were their nephew and niece and they were simply there to visit the babies?
Hope it doesn’t sound too complicated.
Thanks for taking your time to read this.

jackie – Your latter interpretation is the correct one.
Gordon and Kathy were reincarnated into the uncle and aunt of the 2 babies that were born. These babies brought the two of them together [i.e. allowing them to meet at the hospital]. At first, I also thought they were reincarnated into the babies, so I was very surprised when I saw them appear “visiting” the babies.
I just love the ending. It’s so sweet.
Hope that clears things up for you!

hypergal – You’re lucky that although this series is old, it’s very popular.
Someone has uploaded the entire series in Vietnamese for online streaming.
Proceed to Veoh for viewing pleasure.
There are 14 episodes [thus 14 links] total. Be sure to let me know what you think of it.
Enjoy!

Anyone know what the song that usually plays throughout the drama? I think Kathy Chow sang it in the drama from the first pic.
