I picked up When Lanes Merge because the theme song by Ryan Lau caught my ears. Lame reason to rush head first into a TVB series, I know. But I don’t regret it because Lanes is great. The script is tight (with some exceptions I will attack another time). It’s not trailing at snail pace. And what do you know? There is realism. There is cause and effect! Not everything is about fate and destiny and coincidence and weak or indecisive people, and nothing passes by without consequences. Human action is purposeful and Lanes does a heartfelt job showing that. I think Lanes is a much, much improved version of A Journey Called Life (also written by Ga Wai Nam), by about 120 miles per hour, and it has nothing to do with the female cast.

TVB Anniversary Nominations: 2009 4
There is approximately one week until we find out the results to this year’s TVB 42nd Anniversary Awards, which will broadcast on December 4, 2009. With the ever-raging voices of fans supporting almost the same batch of nominees, it will be interesting to see whether TVB decides to listen to the masses or continue with their we-don’t-care favoritism tactic. Of course, the latter has a higher chance of happening, as we all should know by now, but last year’s awards proved that to be somewhat wrong. Perhaps, a miracle will light upon us this December.
Although TVB increased the number of nominee slots and changed the date of their usual anniversary broadcast in order to make way for beloved grand productions Beyond the Realm of Conscience and throw in Born Rich as a side treat, there is still some time before we witness the consequence(s) to this decision. Everything may turn out warm and fuzzy and everyone goes home happy. Everything can get "burned to ashes". We’ll see. But the fact that Beyond finishes airing right before the awards show gives it a much bigger advantage over Born and no, I’m not forgetting Rosy Business. However, do you really think Rosy has a chance? Do you? TVB changed the "rules" for a certain reason, and that reason is certainly obvious.
No matter what, show your support, congratulate winners when the time comes, rage as much as you want. But remember, talent is talent. Awards don’t necessarily change that unbendable truth and with that, my picks follow …
