He changes his name to Kan Lik Shun (Bosco Wong), and he hits stardom almost overnight. The magical chocolates have a time limit though. His personal assistant, King Chi Ko (Kitty Yuen), discovers his secret. Fortunately, instead of disclosing it, she works even harder to help him. Shun is getting more and more popular, even famous star Tse On Fei (Kate Tsui) is going after him. There are only a few chocolates left. Then Shun meets a scientist, who gives him a magical chocolate that has no time limit. If Shun eats it, Tung will disappear from the earth for good.
Issue 658 of TVB Weekly is more or less an advertisement for the mega-casted movie 72 Tenants of Prosperity (72家租客), said to be releasing on February 11, 2010, in time for Chinese New Year. The cast is too large to name, so you can refer to handy-dandy Wikipedia or the official site. Nevertheless, this issue only takes a look at some of the more main artists, including Eric Tsang, Jacky Cheung, Anita Yuen, Bosco Wong, Stephy Tang, Wong Cho Lam, and Linda Chung. There is also a nice spread of the entire cast joyously celebrating under a sky of confetti. Gorgeous Bernice Liu and cute Kate Tsui stand on the side. See if you can identify anymore big stars through the flock of arms and hands!!

As a bonus, a hot Florence Kwok graces the cover of TVB Life.

When I was a kid and watched television only for fun, I thought television work was easy. I thought actors and actresses had an easy, rich everyday life. They get on set, sit around, say a few lines, and get pay big bucks. I didn’t know jack about filming, and definitely had no clue actors could have bad takes (NG). Even when I became more knowledgeable, I didn’t care about how actors did on set or how many takes they went through before making the director’s cut. Even when I became a drama freak, I still didn’t care, not until I was exposed to NG clips from War and Destiny. I realized at that point, as a fan, audience, and outsider to the industry, that one could learn a lot from watching NG clips. Whether it’s a certain artist’s personality or professionalism, the relationships among the actors and actresses, or an artist’s acting ability, anything can be exposed through an NG clip.

Here, I present to you NG clips from Beauty of the Game of two artists, in which I think the gap in their acting abilities is obvious. On the top is the pageant winner, whether in real life or crafted fiction, Kate Tsui and her amusing twirling scene. On the bottom is the short but spunky, hot favorite comedian Wong Cho Lam and his passionate water dumping scene. Let’s see how they fare!

After winning the Miss Perfection pageant, Ko Ching Man (Kate) celebrates in delight in her room, even pasting her face over a poster of Charmaine Sheh. (LOL.) Then, she uses a hairbrush as her trophy and imagines her celebrity self singing as she swirls in excitement and happiness, hopeful that her newfound career would be successful. Having watched this scene earlier today and based on the clip above, I find Kate’s acting superficial. She’s smiling and dancing but she’s not in character at all. She’s just giving the director the face he wants. The feelings are absent. Ching Man claims her dream to be on stage, to act and become an influential actress. Getting the pageant title was a stepping stone to that dream! Ching Man should be elated, high in the clouds, and singing her heart out. But Kate seemed so unnatural and uncomfortable, as if she’s being happy because she has to be, because she was forced to.

I don’t think Kate is a bad actress. She has the confident aura that helps make her stand out on screen, but either she’s not doing her best or she’s trying too hard. In the two episodes I’ve seen of Beauty, Kate either underacts or overacts, and she zigzags between the two extremes a lot that it’s a pain to watch. In this particular scene, Kate is acting for the sake of getting the job done. So far, I don’t think she completely understands her character.

I haven’t watched up to this scene of Kwok Fan (Cho Lam) arguing with Ching Man yet, but I imagine it’s some form of a break-up scene. Cho Lam has it pretty hard to pour water on his head more than 5 times, and out by the sea too! It must have been freezing. Nevertheless, he delivers his lines with overwhelming emotion and it’s easy to feel for his character. You can tell from his body, his voice, and his eyes that his character, Kwok Fan is upset, angry, and slightly unsettled. While Cho Lam may look awkward stomping away in such a waddling manner, he holds true to his character’s candid perkiness.

Hopefully, from working with Cho Lam and other versatile artists like Christine Ng and Kingdom Yuen, Kate will try to broaden her acting scope and reach new heights in order to minimize the agony we have to go through when she will surely grace many future TVB productions.
